When I was a kid, I learned in school that Pluto is one of the 9 planets 🪐that are in our solar system. And for most of my life this has been the case.
In 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet because it did not meet all of the 3 criteria for a full sized planet.
I have had a hard time since 2006 to keep in my head or even when I talk about planets that this happened, in my head Pluto is one of the 9 planets.
It’s funny how things like this change and we sometimes have a hard time letting go of what we did learn and accepting the new norm. 😲
I have a Reading Lesson that talks about this controversial topic and it talks about how scientists can’t seem to agree on what classifies as a “planet”. “Is Pluto really a planet” Grade 7
This story gives students some food for thought to prompt more research into this topic, and even consider which viewpoint they agree with.
This story includes 5 comprehension questions and 1 essay question.
The comprehension questions allow for discussion and opportunity for you as the teacher to show your students how to go back in the story and find the correct answer to the question.
The essay question allows for students to have some writing practice giving their opinion on where they stand on this topic, but it also asks them to back up their opinion with facts as to why they think this. This provides an opportunity for them to practice some research for their essay.
